Resume tips that actually work

Jul 22, 2026 · 7 min read

Most resumes are skimmed in seconds, and many are first read by software. The goal is to be easy for both a human and an applicant tracking system (ATS) to parse quickly.

Keep the layout simple and single-column. Fancy tables, columns and graphics often confuse ATS parsers and can drop your text entirely. Use standard section headings like Experience, Education and Skills.

Lead each bullet with a strong verb and, where you can, a number: 'Increased signups 32%', 'Handled 40 tickets a day'. Concrete results beat vague duties. Tailor the top of your resume to the job by mirroring the wording of the posting.

Proofread ruthlessly and export to PDF so your formatting stays intact. Our free resume builder uses an ATS-friendly layout and exports a clean PDF in your browser — no signup, no watermark.
